Temptation does not come from God

Temptation does not come from God.

James 1: 13

Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man.

tempted (peirazo - pronounced pi-rad-zo)

to test, endeavor, scrutinize, entice, discipline

Present Passive Middle Participle

A noun that signifies action that is happening at the same time as the leading verb (is), whether the action is in the present, past, or future.

The Bible specifically says that temptation is not from God. It is not a sin to be tempted, because the same thing happened to Jesus. Every person, though, has to make a choice as to the action they will take afterwards. Satan will always be on the lookout for ways to drag the Christian down and try to make them fall.

James 1: 14

But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.

The word "tempted" here means the same thing as in the previous verse except for the tense, which is Present Indicative Passive. The indicative tense makes an assertion of a fact, and the passive tense means that the subject receives the action of the verb. Also, the present tense means that the action is in the now, not in the past.

drawn away (exelko - pronounced ex-el-ko)

to drag forth, to entice

lust (epithumia - pronounced ep-ee-thoo-mee-ah)

a longing for what is forbidden, desire

enticed (deleazo - pronounced del-eh-ad-zo)

to entrap, allure, beguile

We are drawn away from God because of our own lust, not because He set a trap to snare us. There is some hidden sin or open door in our life that gives Satan access to try to entrap us into doing something that could eventually destroy us.

This is why it is so important to address sin as soon as the Holy Spirit reveals it to you. Don't give Satan access to any area of your life.

James 1: 15

Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished bringeth forth death.

conceived (suliambano - pronounced sool-iam-ban-o)

to clasp, seize, arrest, capture, implies to catch

(first) sin (apokueo - pronounced ap-ok-oo-eh-o)

to breed forth, to generate

(second) sin (hamartia - pronounced ham-ar-tee-ah)

offense, a sin

finished - to completely entirely

death - literally or figuratively

The first word for sin has a different meaning than the second. When you give in to temptation by being drawn away and enticed, you start to generate something that starts you on a downward spiral and pulls you away from God. Then you have committed a sin that when totally completed can bring forth either physical or spiritual death.

The moment temptation presents itself to you, make the choice to ask God to help you be strong. Don't even think about giving in to it.

Ask God for the wisdom to help you guard against being deceived by Satan. (Read Ask God for Wisdom.)
